Digital Toner

Direct-to-substrate printing using electrostatic charges. No plates, zero setup time, 100% variable data.

Electrophotography Explained

Unlike analog presses that transfer wet ink via pressure, digital toner presses use a photoreceptor drum that is given a positive electrostatic charge. A laser discharges specific areas to form an invisible latent image. Dry toner particles (or liquid ElectroInk in HP Indigo systems) are attracted to the charged areas and then transferred to the paper.

Dry Toner

Used by Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Xerox. Toner particles are fused to the paper using high heat and pressure rollers.

Liquid Toner (ElectroInk)

Exclusive to HP Indigo. Toner particles are suspended in a carrier liquid, acting more like offset ink.

The "Click Charge" Economy

Digital printing economics completely inverse analog printing. In offset, the first sheet costs hundreds of dollars (plates, make-ready time, waste), but sheet 10,000 costs fractions of a cent.

Digital presses operate on a "click charge"—a fixed cost paid to the manufacturer for every rotation of the cylinder, regardless of ink coverage. The first sheet costs the same as the 10,000th sheet. Therefore, digital wins on short runs (1-2000 units), while offset wins at scale.

Common Failures

1. Spine Cracking

Dry toner sits on top of the paper fibers. When folded, the thick toner layer shatters. Always score before folding, or avoid heavy coverage over fold lines.

2. Fuser Oil Banding

Large areas of solid flat color can show roller marks or banding on dry toner systems. Add 2-3% noise/texture to flat color areas to break up banding.
